Located in the heart of Sofia, in an yard between the Presidency of Bulgaria and the Sheraton hotel, the rotunda / church of St. George is currently the oldest preserved building in Sofia. It was built back in the 4th century by the Romans and it was a part then by a larger archaeological complex with a street and some other public buildings. The church survived during the centuries it has been used as a public and religious building. When Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman empire, the church was transformed into a mosque for several hundred years, but in 19th century it became again a Christian church. The church is also famous with its amazing frescoes of twenty two prophets, which were created between the 12th and 14th centuries.
