Located in the heart of Sofia, the cathedral Alexander Nevsky is probably the most visited place by tourists in Sofia.The cathedral Alexander Nevsky is an Orthodox church built in honor of Alexander II, called "Tsar Liberator" because in 1878 his army released Bulgaria from 5-century occupation of the Ottoman Empire and bears his name. Its construction started in 1882 but the biggest part of it was built between 1904 and 1912. The temple was designed by Russian architect prof. Alexander Pomerantzev. Currently cathedral "St. Alexander Nevsky "is the second largest church in the Balkans after the temple of St. Sava (Serbian) and serves as the cathedral church of the Bulgarian patriarch. It can hold up to 10.000 people inside. It has an exclusive interior decoration created with Italian marble, onyx from Brazil, alabaster and others. The main dome has a height of 45 meters. Around the circle of the dome with thin gold letters is written the prayer "Our Father". The bell tower of the temple high near 53 m. And has 12 bells with a total weight of 23 tons, which are made in Moscow.
